Ancient Egyptian revival winged scarab brooch
Ancient Egyptian revival winged scarab brooch, the rotating faience scarab, to red, white and blue enamel raised wing gold mount.
The winged scarab is perhaps the most widely recognised symbol of ancient Egypt. The scarab represented Khepri, the early morning manifestation of the sun god Ra and, as such, also represented creation and the renewal of life.
The open wings are thought to represent the spread of the sun’s rays or the opening of a new life. Winged scarabs were believed to bring good luck, particularly associated with a safe journey to the afterlife, guaranteeing rebirth for the deceased.
Marks:
Apparently unmarked with regard metal or maker.
Electronically tests as approximately 21-22ct gold, possible interference from gilt finish.
Date:
Late 19th to early 20th century.
Faience scarab untested for period.
Length:
4.4cms.
Condition:
The scarab is chipped at the thread hole and to the edge of the tablet to the reverse.
One of the wings is slightly bent, few enamel panels are fractured to the enamel across the stressed area, one enamel panel with small area of discolouration.
The damages are not immediately visible when worn but obviously make an impact, influencing the price on this piece.
By clicking to ‘Purchase’ you agree to having read the Important Information for Purchasers.
Our primary concern is that you are pleased with your purchase. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like about a product before clicking purchase. We appreciate patina and the ‘age’ that older pieces acquire, because of this we do not polish pieces to strip away the age (though your local jeweller may be willing to do this for you for a small fee). Secondhand, vintage and antique pieces will naturally show scratches and small marks, these will often appear more noticeable in the enlarged images that we have made available for you. Our images are as realistic as they can be. Although any appreciable defects/damages will be mentioned please do inspect the images as they do form a part of the condition report.
Antique items may longer not be suitable for everyday wear or may benefit from thoughtful consideration when worn with care.
