Arts & Crafts silver star sapphire brooch, attributed to Mary Thew

£1,200.00

Arts & Crafts silver and star sapphire brooch, attributed to Mary Thew.

Star sapphire estimated weight 6.85cts.
The sapphire has a pleasing medium blue and shows a strong fine asterism.

Since the medieval period sapphires have been ascribed with healing properties, they represent calmness and mental clarity. Star sapphires have been used to ward off the evil eye, used as talismans as protection from illness and bad omens. Today their believed protection includes emotional healing, wisdom and spiritual insight, with peaceful energy to gently dispel depression and anxiety.‍ ‍

Marks:
Apparently unmarked with regard metal or maker.
A number of makers experimented with this Celtic revival style. A brooch similar in shape and style to this is loosely attributed to the Gaskins in ‘Jewelry & Metalwork in the Arts & Crafts Tradition’. William Thomas Blackband also shows similarities, however many more pieces ascribed to Mary Thew show identical scroll motifs that lead me to ascribe her name to this piece.

Date:
Circa 1920-1930.‍ ‍

Length:
8.1cms. ‍ ‍

Condition:
Light surface marks, general dirt/discolouration.
Replacement base metal brooch fittings.
Sapphire rotates in the mount, appears secure.‍ ‍

Literature:

By clicking to ‘Purchase’ you agree to having read the Important Information for Purchasers.

Our primary concern is that you are pleased with your purchase. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like about a product before clicking purchase. We appreciate patina and the ‘age’ that older pieces acquire, because of this we do not polish pieces to strip away the age (though your local jeweller may be willing to do this for you for a small fee). Secondhand, vintage and antique pieces will naturally show scratches and small marks, these will often appear more noticeable in the enlarged images that we have made available for you. Our images are as realistic as they can be. Although any appreciable defects/damages will be mentioned please do inspect the images as they do form a part of the condition report.
Antique items may longer not be suitable for everyday wear or may benefit from thoughtful consideration when worn with care.
