Georgian gold malachite and split pearl brooch

A Georgian gold mourning brooch, the circular malachite cabochon with graduated split pearl surround.
The reverse has a hinged, glazed locket compartment which currently contains a photograph of a gentleman that looks to be early to mid 20th century, with period engraving ‘JS MS 1801 M.S. 25 [indistinct]2’.

Malachite has been used as a talisman against the evil eye and bad omens. Romans wore it to protect against lightning strikes and Greek soldiers wore it to protect against injuries on the battlefield. The Ancient Egyptian lore associated the hippopotamus goddess of motherhood Thueris and the gem protected pregnant women while providing rebirth and eternal youth.

Malachite is also thought to heal emotional pain, helping to remove impurities and negativity.

Apparently unmarked with regard metal or maker.‍ ‍

3.1cms.‍ ‍

Condition:
The brooch fittings have been replaced, the clasp partially covers the engraving.
Pin is slightly loose at the hinge, still functional.
Later small loop to the reverse to support a safety chain.
Slight wear to the gilt finish visible to the reverse.
Surface scratches and slight general wear.
