One side shows a woman in the traditional dress of the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, after an illustration by Louis-Marie Lanté from ‘Costumes of Various Countries’ (Costumes de Divers Pays) Paris, 1827. Louis-Marie Lanté, 1789-1871, was a French painter, a pupil of Vaudoyer, and exhibited at the Salons from 1824 to 1838. This enamel was copied from a plate of one of his rarest volumes depicting figures in traditional dress. Lucerne has long been a tourist destination, paintings near the period show Lucerne before it’s industrial revolution depicting a picturesque town next to a lake.
The reverse has a painted enamel Cupid with quiver, pouring oil onto a heart, aflame, and motto 'il ne s'e teidra' and 'jamais' approximately translating to 'his love will never end'.
Each side has a polychrome enamel petal surround and black enamel border.
The interior contains six scrolls or locks of hair behind glass.
Marks:
Apparently unmarked, electronically tests as approximately 18ct gold.
Date:
Circa 1830-50
Length:
2.2cms (2.9cms including surmount loop).
Condition:
Slight enamel losses to the surrounds. Few surface scratches.
By clicking to ‘Purchase’ you agree to having read the Important Information for Purchasers.
Our primary concern is that you are pleased with your purchase. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like about a product before clicking purchase. We appreciate patina and the ‘age’ that older pieces acquire, because of this we do not polish pieces to strip away the age (though your local jeweller may be willing to do this for you for a small fee). Secondhand, vintage and antique pieces will naturally show scratches and small marks, these will often appear more noticeable in the enlarged images that we have made available for you. Our images are as realistic as they can be. Although any appreciable defects/damages will be mentioned please do inspect the images as they do form a part of the condition report.
Antique items may longer not be suitable for everyday wear or may benefit from thoughtful consideration when worn with care.
