Victorian gold, onyx and pearl eclipse Diamond Ring Effect brooch
The perfect brooch for an umbraphile or shadow lover, a.k.a. someone who chases eclipses!
This Victorian gold, onyx and split pearl crescent brooch is a depiction of The Diamond Ring Effect, which is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during a total solar eclipse, and consequently moving away again.
Eclipses have been signs of great portent for millennia, usually tied to the birth or deaths of great figures or empires. The eclipse itself is often viewed as an ill omen, when the demons are free to emerge, the end of days, and so the moon drawing away, the creation of The Diamond Ring Effect is a sign of the start of salvation.
By the time of the Victorian era with advances in technology and scientific discovery there was a genuine fascination with all things natural, the century held many astronomical events including sixty-three total eclipses and learned people sought to show off their knowledge with trinkets such as this.

By clicking to ‘Purchase’ you agree to having read the Important Information for Purchasers.
Our primary concern is that you are pleased with your purchase. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like about a product before clicking purchase. We appreciate patina and the ‘age’ that older pieces acquire, because of this we do not polish pieces to strip away the age (though your local jeweller may be willing to do this for you for a small fee). Secondhand, vintage and antique pieces will naturally show scratches and small marks, these will often appear more noticeable in the enlarged images that we have made available for you. Our images are as realistic as they can be. Although any appreciable defects/damages will be mentioned please do inspect the images as they do form a part of the condition report.
Antique items may longer not be suitable for everyday wear or may benefit from thoughtful consideration when worn with care.
